🛡️ The night-one safety walkthrough 30 minutes

Do this before you unpack a single box. Knowing your house beats decorating it.

Test every lockAll exterior doors and ground-floor windows. Consider rekeying — you don't know who has copies.
Check smoke & carbon monoxide detectorsPress the test button on every unit. Replace batteries or units older than 10 years.
Find the breaker boxFlip a breaker or two so you know it works; label the panel if it isn't.
Find the main water shutoffUsually near the water meter or where the main line enters. Turn it a quarter-turn to confirm it moves.
Locate the gas shutoff (if applicable)Know where it is; only turn it off in an emergency and call the utility if you smell gas.
Check the water heater setting120°F (49°C) is the safe, efficient standard.
Note existing damagePhotograph any scuffs, stains, or issues — renters need this for the deposit; owners for the punch list.

📦 The week-one settling plan Day by day

Unpack in priority order. The whole house doesn't need to be done — the right rooms do.

Day 1–2: kitchen & bathroomsBeing able to cook, shower, and find the coffee maker makes everything else bearable.
Day 2–3: bedroomsAssemble beds fully — "sleeping on the mattress on the floor" gets old fast.
Day 3–4: the essentials roomHome office or kids' homework spot — get work and school functional.
